![]() ![]() The downside of using a mask in PS is that a Smart Object can only have a single mask for all plugins modifying the object. (I may be wrong, it's not my preferred workflow). The downside of using the mask inside the plugin is that changing the mask may require re-doing the whole filter, especially if you're using a rasterized layer instead of a Smart Object. That way I can re-use the mask at a later time if I'd like. My personal preference is to do masking in Photoshop. If the host program does support masked layers, then you have options. If you're using a host program like Lightroom that doesn't support layers and masks, then masking inside of the plugin is the only option. Short answer: It depends on your workflow. How important is re-mask if clarity and detail have the 'mask' function which seems to be able to provide a quick masking technique? Reilly said he used Topaz re-mask to help in isolating the background. ![]() Just one question outside the original post. Once again guys, sorry not thank you individually but all your inputs have helped greatly. I was also interested in the other comments about other plug-in solutions and I will look though these to get a bit more detail on them. The original image did have circa '20' clarity added. At least one of you suggested doing more in LR5 which again links to these actions. It's great that their author made them available to us all. I had a look at the actions and I will have a long look at them all. I was also very interested in the Photoshop actions that Reilly posted and his image which I have seen on a number of occasions and wondered how you got the 'punch' in it. If I dont get the whole package then maybe it two from adjust, detail and clarity. The comment on listening to a webinar and discounts on the whole package is one I will look at. I think I have examples from adjust, detail and clarity which is exactly what I was hoping to get. There have been many very useful comments on Topaz and their various offerings. I need to go through each reply and look in detail at what you have said. I wont go through and thank everyone individually as it will only waste peoples time but thankyou to EVERYONE who responded. Your communal response answers all the questions I have at the moment on the 'best' plugin for what I want. Aplologies for leaving it nearly 24 hours to respond - I got caught up in non photo stuff!!Īs usual what a breath of fresh air from posting in this forum rather than the usual slagging off in some of the others. Both programs offer dozens of preset options, and of them can be modified to taste.Īdjust can add/blur detail, and tends to work best with exposure and colors.Ĭlarity can do a little bit with colors (and the tool resembles ACR's HSL settings), but is best for detail/contrast.Ī big thanks to all who responded to this thread. I chose those presets based wanting the photo to "pop".īoth programs offer quite a huge amount of flexibility, and I'm literally grabbing two simple presets with no further editing (blend modes, opacity, masking, etc). Bottom right, Clarity with "Fur and Feathers II" preset. Top Left, Adjust with the "Photo Pop" preset. I thought you might find this somewhat useful: I did a small edit on the jpeg provided using luminosity blends in RGB and color adjustments in L*a*b. ![]() Photoshop by itself can provide the subtle type of enhancements that can provide pop without destroying the the original details and nuances. The paintshoppro site have 20% off these just now, couple of weeks ago it was 50%. This pic is done in Clarity with some minor tweaks just för show. I'm new to Topaz, got Adjust, Clarity and Detail recently, so can't really answer your question due to minimal experience so far. Here is a typical shot taken on a very cloudy day - it has been fully pp'd and re-sized /export sharpened but I didnt want to push the clarity slider in LR5 any more. I know I can download a trial but to use them properly, I would need a few days on each. Which is the best plug-in to use, Clarity or Adjust? I've watched the videos and understand that Clarity gives more natural 'pop' but know a few people who use Adjust. I am using LR5 and Photoshop CC for my pp and like the look of the Topaz products (using de-noise at the moment). I have convinced myself I need to get more pop into my bird shots for days when the sun is not shining! Unfortunately, birds will not wait until the light is right. ![]()
